Incomparable Joy and Protection Amid Suffering: Day 6 in the Preparation for Total Consecration According to St. Maximilian Kolbe

On Day 6 of our preparation we will contemplate how Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary offers both protection from evil, as well as great joy in the midst of suffering, if we are living in union with Christ.

Total Consecration Provides Protection in the Midst of Nuclear Warfare:
When the atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan in 1945, everything was destroyed except for one monastery in Hiroshima (that is often written about) and another one in Nagasaki -
How did I not know that two monasteries, filled with monks who lived a life of complete devotion and Total Consecration to Mary were the only places to survive amid such annihilation?!

First of all, in Nagasaki:
Amazingly, it was the monastery that St. Maximilian founded in Nagasaki, Japan - The "Garden of the Immaculata" (that we read about on Day 5 of the preparation) - that would be the only place to survive the atomic bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945.
For, providentially, and what must have been obedience to instructions received in prayer, St. Maximilian built the "Garden of the Immaculate" in a place that was ill-advised by everyone at the time. However, it was because he chose such a spot, that the brothers and the monastery were shielded from the atomic blast fifteen years later, (as they were on the opposite side of a mountain from the blast).

Secondly, the other monastery of Hiroshima is one that I so often speak and write about. It is one of the great miracles of the rosary:
In contrast and astoundingly, the monastery in Hiroshima was within a kilometer of ground zero. There was complete and utter devastation for miles except for this one monastery. The eight priests who lived there were not only not harmed by the blast, but they suffered no ill effects from the radiation throughout their lives, which killed and sickened so many. Thus, they were a constant source of examination. One of the Jesuits, Fr. Schiffer, remarked over 200 times in interviews, “we believe that we survived because we were living the message of Fatima. We lived and prayed the rosary daily in that home.”

O, the wonders and protection Mary offers, for through her humility she is the one God has chosen to crush Satan's head.
Thus, our devotion to Mary offers a shield of protection from even one of the greatest evils imaginable - nuclear war!
But, sometimes in God's almighty plan, Mary doesn't seem to shield us and we are allowed to suffer, and in the eyes of the world, all seems lost...

Life in the City of the Immaculate in Poland
"After having initiated the undertaking and seeing it flourish in Japan, his major superiors appointed [Maximilian to be] the superior of the Polish City of the Immaculate whose apostolic potentials had peaked at that moment in time. Upon his return to Poland, with somewhat of a prophetic “instinct,” knowing perhaps his end was approaching, he busied himself giving continuous and regular spiritual conferences to the friars, so as to consolidate his spiritual and apostolic legacy.
Such preparation became the spiritual strength of the friars themselves. Shortly afterwards, the Nazis occupied Poland in September, 1939. Father Maximilian and many of the friars were arrested. https://saintmaximiliankolbe.com/biography/
"When first arrested he said:
“Courage, my sons. Don’t you see that we are leaving on a mission? They pay our fare in the bargain. What a piece of good luck! The thing to do now is to pray well in order to win as many souls as possible. Let us, then, tell the Blessed Virgin that we are content, and that she can do with us anything she wishes” (Maximilian Mary Kolbe, source).
How beautiful! How well Maximilian understood the great joy that comes from doing God's will!
This first imprisonment lasted approximately three months.
"Upon his release from prison on December 8, 1939, the feast day of the Immaculate Conception of his Heavenly Queen, Father Maximilian returned to a ransacked Niepokalanów. The Nazis suppressed his printing and publishing apostolate. Without being disheartened, his zeal remained unabated. Due to the harsh war conditions of the time, Niepokalanów was quickly turned into a refugee center for displaced families, Jews and victims of political unrest [as Kolbe and his community helped "hide, feed and clothe 3,000 Polish refugees, (of which approximately 1,500 were Jews). In 1941, his newspaper “The Knight of the Immaculate” offered strong criticism of the Nazis." https://www.biographyonline.net/spiritual/maximilian-kolbe.html] While "his solicitude for these war victims had no sectarian boundaries; he fostered in them the need to forgive their enemies, and to acknowledge that hatred is destructive and love alone is creative." https://saintmaximiliankolbe.com/biography/
From the Writings of St. Maximilian Kolbe (KW 149):
"You must be prepared for moments of darkness, anguish, uncertainty, fear, sometimes very insistent temptations, and suffering of the body and of the soul—that are a hundred times more severe. In fact, if there were nothing to bear, for what would you go to heaven? Without struggle victory would be impossible and without victory there can be no crown, there can be no reward [cf. 1 Cor 9:25]. Therefore, from now on be prepared for anything. However, we must not be afraid of anything, because we can and we must win. But how? Here is how: by not trusting ourselves in any way and by offering all of ourselves, all the temptations, and our difficulties to the Immaculata, surely we will always be victorious (it is obvious that on our part we have to do what we can not to fall). The Immaculata cannot abandon her children. Satan never sleeps and—with the permission of God—he often will suggest “wise” propositions, he will show you other “pseudo-duties,” other “happiness,” but he who loves the Immaculata sincerely and wholeheartedly, will easily recognize the enemy and will cast him out. Serving the Immaculata with fidelity, we can give the best service to our family. In fact, is she not able to help our families incomparably better than we can ourselves? Let us entrust to her all of those close to our hearts, and she, the best among mothers, will help them in the best way possible.
This joy and trust in the will of God, stemmed from years of living completely abandoned to Jesus through, with and imitation of Mary. For
"In his desire to attract all men to God's love, Maximilian Kolbe understood that the first fundamental priority of the Church's mission is to imitate the Lord Jesus, the Missionary of the Father par excellence, to do as He did, that is, emptying ourselves in the womb of the same mother, Mary. Therefore Fr. Maximilian, going straight to the essence of things, realized that the strength of the mission consists in belonging totally to Mary, in striving to be like her, to become her (cf. KW508 and 1210), to allow her divine Spouse, the Holy Spirit, the main Protagonist of mission, to continue to bring Christ into the world through us.
...St. Maximilian’s missionary manner ... was born ... from the daily contemplation of Mary, the Woman of the Gospel, this great and humble Woman, who walked the dusty roads of her land carrying God in the heart and singing her Magnificat ... this strong Woman who advanced in her pilgrimage of faith (Cf.Lumen Gentium, 58) repeating her fiat to the Will of God in all the seasons of her life, under the Cross... and beyond! Kolbe’s missionary approach everywhere [was] to be a reflection of Mary." http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_6.pdf:

It was in this imitation of Mary, in two ways in particular, that Maximilian and the friars were guided to trust God in all things:
1. In Prayer, for it is only in prayer that we can hear and be attentive to the voice of the Father:
His words about prayer reflect his beliefs, but above all his experience: “Prayer is a means that people do not know about, and yet it is the most effective way to restore peace in the soul, to give them happiness, because it serves to bring them closer to God’s love. Prayer revives the world. Prayer is the indispensable condition for the regeneration and the life of every soul. By means of prayer, St. Thérèse de Lisieux, without leaving the walls of her convent, became the patron of all missions and not only the titular patron saint, as experience shows. Let us pray, let us pray well, pray much, both with our lips and in our thought, and we shall experience in ourselves how the Immaculata will take increasing possession of our souls, how our belonging to her will deepen more and more in every respect, how our sins will vanish, and our flaws will weaken, how gently and powerfully we will come ever closer to God... To the extent in which we burn more and more with divine love, we will kindle a similar love even in others.”(KW903).http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_6.pdf
2. In holy obedience, for after hearing the voice of the Lord, we must act upon it:
Here is what he wrote in 1931... to the seminarians of Niepokalanów: “You yourself will experience in your lives, even on this earth, that all of the perfection of holiness, all the fervor of action, all the usefulness of the missionary ministry consists not in great wisdom, nor in great intelligence, nor in great skills or even in the amount of prayers and penitence, but solely in the perfection of Holy Obedience. Why is this? Because through Holy Obedience the certain will of God, the will of the Immaculata manifest themselves; through Holy Obedience we truly become an instrument in her hands....”(KW 380). http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_6.pdf
It is when we become accustomed to listening to the Voice of God and living in obedience to His Will, like Jesus and Mary, that we draw ever deeper into union. A union that seeks only the Will of God, no matter the human cost:

From the Writings of St. Maximilian Kolbe (KW 987C and 1080)
Truly supreme and incomparable joy is infused by the Holy Spirit, when one suffers for love of Christ. [The purpose of the MI] is to make humanity happy, by instilling into each soul—which thirsts and craves for happiness every moment of its life—the love of the one who can and wants to introduce peace and joy into each heart, during this earthly exile, in the midst of the confusion that surrounds us, of the concerns and headaches that beset us everywhere, of the pain that reaches the very depths of our hearts. Those who truly love the Immaculata and flee to her with filial love and affection at times of temptation and hardship in life, will surely take down all the obstacles on the road to happiness, and foretaste the joys of heaven. Those who in their lifetime have worked with zeal to expand the reign of the Immaculata will be happy at death.

In this preparation, then, may we strive also to live completely abandoned to God
- like Jesus, who first abandoned Himself to Mary.
And in imitation of Mary
- by continually giving our Fiat to God, and saying only and always, whether in times of great suffering or in great joy:
"Let it be done unto me according to your will"

in order to "expand the reign of the Immaculata" in our hearts and the hearts of all her children.

For it is living a life of prayer in this way,
that we come to know joy even when all our human efforts are destroyed and our very lives are stripped from us...
For the one who loves Jesus and Mary
and is truly living in union with them
is at peace and can never be really harmed or dismayed.
For in all of these sufferings we realize it is in dying that we are born to eternal life!

So let us pray:
Come Holy Spirit, living in Mary, help us to prepare well for our Total Consecration.
St. Maximilian,
Be with us and help us to become the love of Mary and Jesus and to pray deeply and listen attentively to the voice of God

so to give ourselves entirely and without reserve to both of them in complete surrender.
So that Mary, in turn, can draw us ever closer to Jesus and make of us great saints!
Pray for us and help us to love even to the point of suffering in order to win all souls for Christ through Mary and the Miraculous Medal and the most Holy Rosary!
We ask this in Jesus's Name, Amen.
Lastly, may we never forget to recognize that the prayer Mary taught us, that wearing the miraculous medal and the Most Holy Rosary are true gifts of heaven.

May we utilize them daily to help us become a garden of Mary's and Jesus's love even in the midst of great evil and destruction:

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially the enemies of Holy Church and all those recommended to you.

“Only love creates”: Day 5 in the Preparation for Total Consecration According to St. Maximilian Kolbe

We love because God first loved us! John 4:19
In turn, we love in and through the Immaculata -
(St. Maximilian's favorite name for Mary -
the one she herself used at Lourdes, saying: "I am the Immaculate Conception")
 - because she, also, first loved us!
“Only at the time of God’s judgment in Heaven shall we become aware of the solicitude that our tender Heavenly Mother has had for each of us, ever since the beginning, of the solicitude that she has toward every soul, her child, to shape it according to the pattern of Jesus, her firstborn Son, the prototype of holiness, God and man” (KW1313).
Pope Benedict XVI said at the inaugural Mass of his pontificate, “Christ does not take anything and gives everything.” As already proclaimed by the Second Vatican Council: “Only Christ fully reveals man to himself. Only in the mystery of the incarnate Word does the mystery of man take on light” (GS22). And this is the motherhood of the Militia of the Immaculata, according to the desire of St. Maximilian, proclaiming Jesus Christ!
“That is the MI: to let her into all hearts, to bring her into being within all hearts, that by entering those hearts and taking most perfect possession of them, she may there give birth to the  sweet Jesus, God, and there raise Him to perfect age. What a beautiful mission! ... Is that not true? ... The elevation of man to God Man, through Man God’s Mother” (KW508). http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_5.pdf

This beautiful mission that St. Maximilian longed to live out and share with all souls developed a step further in 1930... when the City of the Immaculate in Poland had been established for three years ... St. Maximilian and four other friars journeyed to Japan in order to found another "City for Mary."

The Garden of the Immaculate

A saint’s heart can never be constrained to geographical boundaries. He is, by grace, always a missionary. This was especially true of St. Maximilian Kolbe. He loved the Immaculate with the Heart of Jesus, and he loved Jesus with the heart of Mary. It is manifested in a similar, universal desire to win all souls to Jesus and the Immaculate.
St. Maximilian in JapanWith the permission of his superiors, St. Maximilian, considering the need for further expansion, started a mission in Japan with four other friars in 1930. At Nagasaki, they established a new “City of the Immaculate” (Mugenzai no Sono – literally “Garden of the Immaculate”), thereby introducing his ideal, the Immaculate, to the Orient. In spite of problems with local authorities, language, culture, and climate – one month after their arrival, Father Maximilian was, nevertheless, able to publish the first issue of “Seibo no Kishi,” the Japanese version of the magazine “Knight of the Immaculate.”
He wrought numerous conversions among the Japanese; most of them thanked him for his heroic and unconditional sacrifice to draw them to the true Faith. But St. Maximilian recognized that this apostolic success could only be attributed to a pure and undivided love for the Immaculate. Where there is love and charity, there is God. (https://saintmaximiliankolbe.com/biography/)
To announce Jesus Christ is a beautiful mission, because every person finds in Him the happiness and fullness of meaning for his or her life. We may share the spiritual motherhood of Mary, not only listening to the Word of God, but also by becoming co-workers in her maternal mission. In fact Maximilian writes that Mary does not want to carry out her mission alone, but that she wants to engage us too. Motherhood means care, love, attention to others. Maximilian is an effective witness to it. The proclamation of the Gospel is the greatest act of love; it is the first charity. The Gospel message transforms the proud-hearted and gives the humble the awareness of their dignity, as already announced by the Virgin of Nazareth in her Magnificat. The proclamation of the Gospel is also the first form of charity for every member of the Militia of the Immaculata.
Maximilian Kolbe, facing the reality of his time (atheism in particular) said that:
“These poor people, therefore, need light, a great deal of supernatural light, of supernatural energy. They are unhappy, discontented, because they take as their ultimate goal what is only a means and therefore, after reaching the happiness to which they aspire, cannot find what they were looking for. And they continue to search with a dejected heart, with bitterness in their souls. How can we fail to reach out to them? How can we not to help them placate their hearts, lift their mind above all that passes toward the one ultimate purpose, God? Love for one’s neighbor pushes those souls who have already found the true ideal of life not to forget their brothers and sisters around them. One of the many associations that practice this love of one’s neighbor is the Militia of the Immaculata” (KW1237).
Maximilian is also a witness of that love which is ready for martyrdom. Maximilian is the “man for man,” who lived with the conviction that “Only love creates” (cf. KW1205). This is the lesson he learned in his deep and intimate daily experience of communion with Christ through his consecration to the Immaculata.
Being at the school of Mary led Maximilian, and can lead each of us, to be “for others” in everyday life, in the family, at work, in our social relationships. The Marian manner of life has love as its center, its heart, its fundamental dimension. http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_5.pdf
From the Writings of St. Maximilian Kolbe (KW 925)
"Mutual love does not consist in the fact that no one ever causes any sorrow in us, but that we strive not to cause grief to others and we become accustomed to forgiving whatever hurts us immediately and completely. In such mutual forbearance lies the essence of mutual love.
St. Thérèse writes: “I saw only too well how very imperfect was my love for my Sisters; I did not really love them as Jesus loves them. I see now that true charity consists in bearing with the faults of those about us, never being surprised at their weaknesses, but edified at the least sign of virtue. I see above all that charity must not remain hidden in the bottom of our hearts, for ‘no man lighteth a candle and putteth it in a hidden place, nor under a bushel; but upon a candle-stick, that they who come in may see the light’ [Lk 11:33]. It seems to me that this candle is the symbol of charity; it must shine out not only to cheer those we love best, but ALL those who are of the household.”
And later she writes: “I know, my Jesus, that You never command the impossible; You know better than I do how frail and imperfect I am. You know perfectly well that I can never hope to love my Sisters as You love them, unless You Yourself love them in me. It is only because You are willing to do this that You have given us a New Commandment, and I love it because it is my assurance that You desire to love in me all those whom You command me to love.” The deeper such love, the more effective will missionary activity be."

The deeper our love, the more effective all our activity will be...
What a profound truth!
May we never forget this
nor neglect to ask for and be open to more and more love.
For this deeper love that is so effective is nothing less than Divine Love and forgiveness.
Remembering "To Forgive is Divine."
Thus, may this preparation fill us with ever deeper love that forgives all those who have harmed us in order to help create a "Garden of the Immaculata" in our hearts and in our lives.
So that, in and through our Total Consecration to her,
Mary is able
to love others with her own Motherly heart through us!
- especially those who are the hardest ones for us to love.

Let us pray:
Come Holy Spirit, living in Mary, help us to prepare well for our Total Consecration.
St. Maximilian,
Be with us and help us become the love of Mary and Jesus as we give ourselves entirely and without reserve to both of them in complete surrender.

So, that Mary, in turn, can draw us ever closer to Jesus and make of us great saints!
Pray for us and help us live out the love you poured out to win all souls for Christ through Mary and the Miraculous Medal! We ask this in Jesus's Name, Amen.
Lastly, may we never forget to recognize that the prayer Mary taught us and that wearing the miraculous medal are true gifts of heaven. May they help us to be a garden of Mary's and Jesus's love where there is hatred, unforgiveness and hurt, disbelief and discontent:

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially the enemies of Holy Church and all those recommended to you.

City of the Immaculata: Day 4 in the Preparation for Total Consecration According to St. Maximilian Kolbe

On this day 4 of our preparation for total consecration we will ponder Maximilian's next steps in his journey, and how God began to bless his efforts unimaginably!

The City of the Immaculate

Group of Friars
"When he returned to Poland as a young priest in 1919, he was appointed professor to the Franciscan seminarians in Cracow. However, because of his failing health and having contracted tuberculosis, he was deemed unsuitable for the task. His superiors, therefore, decided to assign him to the office of confessor. Far from helping his already weakened condition, he became increasingly frail, and was subsequently consigned to the sanitarium of Zakopane.
But his zeal for souls, characteristic of a true saint, did not diminish because of his physical ailments. He provided various spiritual services among his sick companions and instilled in them the love of Our Lady. After having recovered from a long confinement – which served as a period of silence and purification for him – he was prepared to launch a new apostolic endeavor, the likes of which had never before been seen in Poland, or in the world: the City of the Immaculate (Niepokalanów).
It all started in the humble surroundings of the friary in Grodno where Father Maximilian established a printery for the purpose of promoting devotion to the Immaculate. However, the growing number of subscribers to his printing apostolate forced the friars to transfer their location to donated land in Warsaw in 1927, and is where Father Maximilian established the first City of the Immaculate. It was called “city” because the friars numbered almost eight hundred, all working for the Immaculate with the huge mass media apostolate. They lived heroic lives of poverty, continuous prayer, and voluntary penance. They were united in their mission of evangelizing not only Poland, but the whole world! Day and night, the friars spent themselves in promoting Catholic doctrines, particularly those concerning Our Blessed Lady. They did all this in view of cultivating the need for conversion and sanctification of souls, both on the individual and collective levels, via the mediation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For Father Maximilian Kolbe, sanctification always necessitated the mediation of Mary because, for him, only through her and by means of her, the Holy Spirit, the Sanctifier of souls, acts in an inseparable way in each individual soul… whether or not that soul acknowledges Mary’s role in this process. But as he explained, the more a soul acknowledges and is conscious of Mary’s important role in the economy of salvation – the surer, easier and faster that soul can become a saint via consecration to her.
Since, unfortunately, there are so few of the faithful who are aware of this wonderful “elevator” to sanctify souls, namely Our Lady ─ there are still fewer working to make her better known and loved. This was the ever-consuming theological and spiritual focus of Kolbe’s apostolic enterprise and, therefore,  his reason for launching this work for the cause of the Immaculate, using every possible licit means. Apart from his principal publication, the monthly magazine “Rycerz Niepokalanej” (“Knight of the Immaculate”) that reached its peak of 600,000 copies per issue, he also printed a daily newspaper, the “Maly Dziennik,“ which eventually reached a circulation of one million. Miscellaneous books, magazines, and pamphlets for people in all walks of life were freely circulated by the friars.
Friars at work
What could possibly be the secret of the incredible progress of Kolbe’s work? He himself pointed out to the friars that the true progress of Niepokalanów does not actually consist in constructing more buildings, of adding more printing presses, or of publications becoming more widespread. It consists, rather, in the daily deepening of one’s love for the Immaculate. The success of the work is brought about by Mary’s mediation and assistance. (https://saintmaximiliankolbe.com/biography/)
Isn't this all amazing?
Imagining 800 brothers living together in a "city" dedicated completely to Mary and living for her - as they touched millions with their writings - its simply incredible! The more we love Our Lady and give ourselves completely to her, the more she is able to help us bear tremendous fruit as she forms us into other Christs - Christs enflamed with love - who become His Heart and Voice and Hands and Feet in the world!

So it was with Maximilian. He was on fire with love - a love that translated into striving:
“To conquer the whole world for Christ through the Immaculata.”
[He saw this as possible through] the “total and limitless” belonging to the Immaculata [that] widens toward the passionate search for the heart of man, of all men, of all the billions of hearts beating on earth beyond Poland and Japan (cf. KW 647).
We see how this ideal made him a missionary, caused him to implement pioneering apostolic projects for those days through the mass media, made him the spiritual father of a movement of spirituality and mission in the Church, the Militia of the Immaculata, and led him to give his life for a brother.
What does it mean to live in the footsteps of Mary?
It means to live a Gospel life, as Kolbe did, a life for God and for others, in obedience to God and in service to others.

 Biographers recall an episode:
“Niepokalanow is at its best. Maximilian is asking the young friars what, according to them, is the next step to take. After several replies focused on the need to increase the productivity, finally a young friar whispers: ‘We must first increase inwardly, and then the productivity will be a consequence.’
Maximilian was so happy with this answer and added, “The expansion of our work will not be a demonstration of progress. Nor vast new buildings... So what would it take to make progress? What is the real Niepokalanow’s progress? And above all, what is our Niepokalanow? Is it this visible activity? Is it the industrial productivity? Or the circulation of the magazine? No, there is something better! Our Niepokalanow is the inner world of our souls! As a result, even if it were necessary to suspend our work, even if we had to disperse like leaves swept by the autumn wind, if in our hearts the Niepokalanow’s ideal remains and continues to flourish, then and only then we can say that we are in full progress" (cf. L. Faccenda, OFM Conv., Ho visto Padre Kolbe, Edizioni Milizia Mariana,1970, pp. 27-28).
http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_4.pdf
So, even more than this booming apostolate, Maximilian understood the true greatness of their lives was, first of all, in their souls.
When our souls have become a place of prayer, of love, a place where we are drawn into ever deeper union with Christ...the outward circumstances of our lives matter little. Even if all we've worked for comes to naught and is destroyed (as would happen eventually to their beloved Niepokalanow), still there is joy in our love of Christ - still there is progress!

Thus, may this preparation help us to build a "City of Mary" in our souls. So that, in and through our Total Consecration to her, we are able to give ourselves completely to her and so allow her to raise us up to God in a quicker way than we ever could on our own.

When we are united and given over to Mary in this way, the Holy Spirit flies to us and together they form us into other Christs! Christs set on fire with His love - and so we are able to bear great fruit as we are inspired to strive with all our being to pray, love and grow closer to God and one another.

As an outward sign of this internal consecration and devotion, may we wear the miraculous medal with great fervor and pray the prayer Mary taught us daily (in it's updated form that the Militia prays today):

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially the enemies of Holy Church and all those recommended to you.

And pray: Come Holy Spirit, living in Mary, help us to prepare well for our Total Consecration.
St. Maximilian, pray for us and help us live out the wisdom you express and help win all souls for Christ through Mary and the Miraculous Medal!
Be with us and help us understand Mary's place in the Holy Trinity's plan of salvation and give ourselves entirely and without reserve to Our Blessed Mother, so that she, in turn, can draw us ever closer to Jesus and make of us great saints!
We ask this in Jesus's Name, Amen.

To Win All Souls for Christ through Mary and the Miraculous Medal: Day 3 in the Preparation for Total Consecration According to St. Maximilian Kolbe

On this day 3 of our preparation for total consecration we will ponder Maximilian's Goal to Win all Souls for Christ through Mary. Contemplating Mary as not only our Mother, but the Mother of all souls - surely spurred St. Maximilian to understand that a Mother cannot be happy if any one of her children is lost. How important it was, then, for him to bring all souls to her!! Nothing short of the whole world would do.

"We could say that what is truly original in St. Maximilian, compared to other forms of consecration to Mary in the Church, is precisely its missionary and universal dimension.
He founded the MI Movement ... with a great ideal in his heart...:
"To win the whole world for Christ through the Immaculata" (Cf. KW382);
To embrace the entire globe “... so that she may extend her dominion in the hearts of all those who live in any corner of the earth" (KW1210).
In the original charter of the MI... he indicated the goal of his Movement with these words:
"To bring about the conversion of sinners, heretics, schismatics, etc., especially Freemasons, and the sanctification of all, under the patronage and through the mediation of the B.V.M. Immaculate"(KW1368).
To obtain this purpose St. Maximilian considered one’s total consecration to the Immaculata the essential condition (ibid.).
St. Maximilian founded the MI with a clear objective: that everyone be converted and become a saint. Whoever is consecrated to the Immaculata in the MI Movement embraces the mission of the Church to proclaim the Gospel to every person, to the ends of the earth, collaborating in Mary’s maternal care for the brethren of her Son, which continues until they are led into the happiness of their true home (LG62). ...The charismatic gift he received is the spiritual insight about Mary’s maternal role in the Church and in the life of every person, and the intuition regarding the fact that this Mother urges us to collaborate in her maternal mission. (Cf.KW1220)
Jesus’ gift from the Cross is the source of the charism of the MI movement: the gift of His Mother to John which took place at the climax of the mystery of redemption. This motherhood that we received calls us to ensure that Christ is born, through the Mother, in the hearts of all men.
Let us will refer again to a text that defines beautifully the MI identity and mission:
"That is the MI: to let her into all hearts, to bring her into being within all hearts, that by entering those hearts and taking most perfect possession of them, she may there give birth to the sweet Jesus, God, and there raise Him to perfect age. What a beautiful mission! ... Is that not true?... The elevation of man to God-Man, through the God-Man’s mother"(KW508).http://missionimmaculata.com/images/Documents/preparation_for_consecration/Preparation_for_MI_Consecration_Part_3.pdf
One of the most important means of bringing Mary into all hearts was to utilize the gift that she herself gave:

All Means, especially the Miraculous Medal...
Maximilian ... described the means that the newly established association would have to use in the work of evangelization:
“1. To entreat the Immaculata possibly every day with this ejaculatory prayer: ‘O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially the Freemasons.’
2. To use all legitimate means, according to one’s possibilities in the various states and conditions of life, as occasions arise: which is entrusted to the zeal and prudence of each; let the special means be the Miraculous Medal” (KW21)
In the course of the years, Father Maximilian would not hesitate to state that, in addition to the supernatural means –prayer and sacrifice– all legitimate means inspired by love and all inventions are to be at the service of the Gospel through the Immaculata: “Art, literature, theater, cinema, books, journalism, radio, etc., etc.” (SK991 Q). His mind and heart were always drawn toward new horizons in order to reach every person as soon as possible and to share the gift of Mary, the new life of grace. He would never forget to remind himself and others, however, that in this enterprise we are called to be personally engaged: “But before everything else we ourselves must be hers, even to the utter annihilation of our ego, to a total holocaust, without reserve and without limits (“penance, penance, penance”). Everything for her sake, then: our soul, our body, all the faculties of the soul and of the body, talents, energy, science, art, etc., etc... everything! Everything: the past, the present, and future, life, death, eternity. In a word, everything, everything without even the slightest, tiniest reservation” (ibid.).
While he valued all means, Maximilian reminds us that among them the Miraculous Medal, which Our Lady herself gave us through her appearances to St. Catherine Labourè, has to be cherished in a special way. The Medal is a small yet powerful tool for touching hearts, a mini-catechism on Our Lady’s role in the history of salvation. How many stories of spiritual and physical healing, of conversion and openness to the workings of grace are connected to the Miraculous Medal...! The Medal is not only the exterior sign of our total consecration to Mary (cf. KW991 Q), but also a tool we can all use to introduce her to others: “Behold your Mother!”
St. Maximilian trusted that the Miraculous Medal and the words that Our Mother dictated for it were truly a gift from heaven! Therefore, sharing the medal and the story of it's origin was, of course, an important part of Militia. To remember the miraculous events of the medal that was given to us, let us listen to St. Maximilian himself recount the story:

The Miraculous Medal, Silver Bullet of the MI
The "The so-called Miraculous Medal is universally known. Its origin dates back to 1830, and the fortunate soul to whom the Most Blessed Immaculate Virgin Mary showed it was Catherine Labouré, at that time a novice of the Sisters of Mercy, in Rue du Bac, Paris. Let us listen to her story:
“On November 27, the Saturday before the first Sunday of Advent, while I was doing my evening meditation in deep silence, I thought I could almost hear the rustling of a silk dress, which reached me from the right side of the sanctuary, and I saw the Most Blessed Virgin near the painting of St. Joseph. She was of medium height, but of such extraordinary beauty that it is utterly impossible for me to describe her. She stood upright and was dressed in a white dress with reddish highlights, similar to those usually worn by virgins, that is, buttoned to the neck and tight-sleeved. A white veil covered her head and fell down on both sides to her feet. Her forehead was adorned with a small strip of thin lace that clung tightly to her hair. Her face was partly uncovered and under her feet lay the terrestrial globe, or rather a hemisphere, because I could see only one half of the globe. Her hands, raised to the waist, gently held up another globe (symbol of the whole universe). She kept her eyes turned toward heaven, as if to offer the whole universe to God, and her face shone with ever brighter radiance.
Suddenly there appeared on her fingers rings adorned with precious gems of great value, sending off rays of light that spread out in all directions; these rays surrounded her in such splendor that her face and her clothes became invisible. The precious gems were of varying size, while the rays coming out of them gave off more or less intense beams of light.
I cannot possibly express all that I heard and felt in that short period of time.
While, fascinated by the sight of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, I was carefully observing her majesty, the Most Blessed Virgin turned her benevolent gaze on me, and an inner voice told me: ‘The globe that you see stands for the entire world and every single person.’
At this point I am no longer able to describe the impression that I felt at the sight of the rays that shone so dazzlingly. Then the Most Blessed Virgin told me: ‘The rays that you see emanating from the palms of my hands are the symbol of the graces that I bestow on all those who ask for them,’ and with that she gave me to understand how great her generosity is to those who turn to her… How many graces she grants to all those who call upon her… At that point I lost consciousness, fully absorbed in bliss… Then the Most Blessed Virgin, whose hands were pointing to the ground, was surrounded by some kind of oval frame, on which appeared the following inscription in letters of gold: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Then I heard a voice saying to me: ‘Have a medal struck according to this model; all those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around their necks. I shall bestow many graces on those who put their trust in me.’
At that point,” Labouré continued, “it seemed to me that the picture was turning over. And on the other side I saw the letter M, in the center of which stood a cross. Below the monogram of the Most Blessed Virgin there were the Heart of Jesus surrounded by a crown of thorns and the heart of Mary pierced by a sword.”
The vision was repeated three times, and each time Sister Catherine confided in her spiritual director, Father Aladel. But fearing that the whole thing was a delusion, Fr. Aladel kept delaying the striking of the medal. In fact he forbade the nun to even think about it. Eventually he decided to report the matter to the Archbishop, Msgr. De Quélen. When the Archbishop showed that he was in favor of it, the medal was finally struck. It was the year 1832.
Amazing miracles of conversion started to occur immediately, and demand for the medal became so high that as many as 80 million of them were struck in the first ten years.
Is it not fitting, therefore, that as we consecrate ourselves to the Immaculata without reserve, we should grace our chest with the Miraculous Medal? This medal, then, is the external sign of consecration to the Immaculata: it is the second condition.
(Kolbe Writings, 1011)
To end this day of preparation, there is one last writing of St. Maximilian. In it, he is encouraging all Knights of the Immaculata (20,000 of them in Poland!!!) to renew their complete surrender to Mary - and to not forget to pray the prayer that Mary herself taught through the Miraculous Medal - the one to which he felt called to add the additional words:
and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially the Freemasons.’
From the Writings of St. Maximilian Kolbe (KW 1079):

"Let us pray to the Immaculata with fervor, that she may accept us as her own property. We can do that by using the act of consecration to the Immaculata printed on our enrollment cards. Thus, on this day, all of us knights of the Immaculata renew our act of unconditional surrender to her. Let us do it together, if we can; all of us. In Poland, there are now about 20,000 of us. Let us rekindle in ourselves love and trust toward our most beloved Lady, Queen, Mother, Leader, Hope... Some of us may already have forgotten to recite that short little prayer every day: the ejaculatory prayer that the Immaculata herself taught us, the one listed in our enrollment cards as one of the means [available to us]. May such people be rekindled and resolve no longer to neglect it. Also... each of us ought to ask himself or herself: Have I done all I could in the course of this year for the Immaculata, for the salvation and sanctification of my soul and my neighbor’s? Or am I being reproached by my conscience for my laziness, listlessness, my poor zeal... or my want of self-sacrifice?... Let us examine ourselves... Let this day be a day of rebirth for our souls, a day of renewal in our zeal for expanding the kingdom of the Most Loving Queen of heaven and earth. We ought not to rely at all on ourselves. Neither should we, however, place limits on our trust in her. In every difficulty or temptation, let us have recourse to her and we shall not fail. Let us entrust all our endeavors to her and we shall surely achieve what she wants.
May we take his words to heart and wear the miraculous medal with great fervor and pray this prayer daily (this is the updated form that the Militia prays today):

O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially the enemies of Holy Church and all those recommended to you.

As a part of our preparation and our consecration, may we consider not only wearing a miraculous medal, but consider giving them away as St. Maximilian did as an act of love, remembering:
"The Medal is a small yet powerful tool for touching hearts, a mini-catechism on Our Lady’s role in the history of salvation.
As we continue to pray:
Come Holy Spirit, living in Mary, help us to prepare well for our Total Consecration.
St. Maximilian, pray for us and help us live out the wisdom you express and help win all souls for Christ through Mary and the Miraculous Medal!
And be with us as we continue to ponder Mary's place in the Holy Trinity's plan of salvation - and strive to give ourselves more and more fully and without reserve to Our Blessed Mother, even to giving her: "everything, everything without even the slightest, tiniest reservation”
so that she, in turn, can draw us ever closer to Jesus and make of us great saints!
We ask this in Jesus's Name, Amen.
