Mirjana's Meeting With Pope St. John Paul II: He Believed Medjugorje Was The Answer to His Prayers!

On this anniversary of Pope St. John Paul II's death on April 2, 2005, I wanted to share the amazing firsthand account of a meeting he had with the reported visionary, Mirjana Soldo, in July 1987.  

Mirjana writes about the meeting in her autobiography, My Heart Will Triumph. 

While visiting the Vatican with a Croatian youth group to Rome for a papal audience on July 22, 1987, Mirjana first encountered John Paul II. As the Pope walked among the people giving blessings, he put his hand over Mirjana's head and blessed her. After he had done so, an Italian priest informed him who Mirjana was. After hearing that this was Mirjana, the reported visionary of Medjugorje:

he stopped, came back and reach out to bless me again. I was frozen. His vivid blue eyes seemed to pierce my soul. Unable to think of any words to say. I bowed my head and felt the warmth of his blessing. When he left again, I turned to the Italian priest and joked, "He just thought I needed a double blessing." We both laughed.

Later that afternoon... I was shocked to receive a personal invitation from the pope. He was requesting that I come to meet with him privately the next morning at Castel Gandolfo...

Mirjana writes of Pope John Paul II's tenderness and love and how she was moved to tears upon meeting him the following morning. She writes of their struggle to understand each other until they found out they both could speak Italian.  

Then she writes:

We talked about many things - some I can share, some I cannot -and soon I felt at ease in his presence. He spoke with such love that I could have talked with him for hours.

And includes the following conversation:

"Please ask the pilgrims in Medjugorje to pray for my intentions," he said. 

"I will, Holy Father," I assured him.

"I know all about Medjugorje I've followed the messages from the beginning. Please, tell me what it's like for you when Our Lady appears."

The pope listened intently as I described what I experienced during apparitions. At times, he smiled and gently nodded his head.

"And when she departs," I concluded, "I feel so much pain, and all I can think of in that moment is when I will see her again."

The pope leaned towards me and said, "Take good care of Medjugorje, Mirjana. Medjugorje is the hope for the entire world."

The pope's words seemed like a confirmation of the importance of the apparitions and of my great responsibility as a visionary. I was surprised by the conviction in his voice, and by how his eyes sparkled every time he said the word Medjugorje - not to mention how well he pronounced the name of the village, which had always been so amazingly difficult for outsiders to say.

"Holy Father," I said, "I wish you could see all the people who go there and pray.

The pope turned his head and gazed towards the east, releasing a pensive sigh.

"If I were not the pope," he said, "I would have gone to Medjugorje a long time ago."

I will never forget the love that radiated from the Holy Father. What I felt with him is similar to what I feel when I am with Our Lady, and looking into his eyes was just like looking into hers. Later, a priest told me that the pope had been interested in Medjugorje from the very beginning, because right before our apparitions started, he had been praying for Our Lady to appear again on Earth. 

"I cannot do it all alone, Mother," he prayed. "In Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Poland and so many other communist countries, people cannot freely practice their faith. I need your help, dear Mother."

According to this priest, when the pope heard that Our Lady had appeared in a tiny village in a communist country, he immediately thought Medjugorje had to be an answer to his prayers.

In a talk Mirjana gave to pilgrims, she told the following story of how John Paul II's desire to come to Medjugorje was fulfilled after his death:

On the Mount of Apparitions, I saw a pair of shoes of the Pope in front of me. After the apparition, the gentleman who brought these shoes (he didn’t introduce himself) said, "It was the Pope’s desire for a long time to come to Medjugorje. So I said to him, 'If you do not go, I will take your shoes.' And that is how I brought his shoes, so they may be present during the apparition.” And that is how Saint John Paul II’s desire to come to Medjugorje was satisfied."

I pray that these stories about John Paul's belief in Medjugorje may inspire us to learn more about the reported apparitions of Medjugorje and take the messages of Our Blessed Mother to heart - for if these almost 38 years of daily apparitions are really an answer to John Paul's prayers, their importance cannot be overstated.

What Are We to Believe About Medjugorje? Here Are the Facts

In the midst of conflicting reports and opinions, what are we to believe about Medjugorje?

Here are facts regarding Medjugorje. 
May they provide help in discerning the authenticity of these daily reported apparitions.
(I've written much about Medjugorje. To find out more, click on the links at the end of this article.)

Fact:  St. John Paul II praised Medjugorje often - calling it “the spiritual heart of the world.”

Fact:  Medjugorje is a village where tens of millions have visited since 1981. It has been reported consistently and undeniably, for nearly 38 years, that Mary, the Mother of Jesus has been coming to earth every day to call people to conversion and prayer.

Fact:    Vatican Commission’s Findings

The International Investigative Commission on Medjugorje, presided over by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, was established by Pope Benedict XVI. The Vatican Commission studied the alleged apparitions of Mary at Medjugorje for 4 years, from 2010-2014. This study, confirmed by Archbishop Hoser below, reportedly voted overwhelmingly to recognize as supernatural the first seven appearances of Mary in 1981. 

The commission also reportedly recommended Medjugorje to be designated as a pontifical shrine.  

Pope Francis commented on the study, saying: 

"The 'real core' of the commission’s report is 'the spiritual fact, the pastoral fact' that thousands of pilgrims go to Medjugorje and are converted. Fact:     POPE FRANCIS HAS AUTHORIZED DIOCESAN PILGRIMAGES
[May 12, 2019]“Pilgrimages to Medjugorje…can now be officially organized by dioceses and parishes and will no longer take place only in a private capacity which as has so far been the case. The announcement was made during Mass, at the parish shrine which has become a destination for millions of pilgrims, by the Apostolic Nuncio Luigi Pezzuto in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Archbishop Henryk Hoser, the Holy See's Special Apostolic Visitator.” This announcement confirms Archbishop Hoser’s previous statements below.
Pilgrimages do not authenticate known events The "ad interim" director of the Holy See Press Office, Alessandro Gisotti: "care to prevent these pilgrimages from being interpreted as an authentication of known events, which still require examination by the Church."

Andrea Tornielli:  “The authorization of pilgrimages is a sign of recognition of the good that happens in the parish shrine, where many people come closer to the sacraments.” It is a fact that millions of pilgrims in recent years have had a significant experience of faith on their way to Medjugorje: this is attested to by the long lines at confessionals and the evening Eucharistic adoration in the large parish church without a square metre free filled with kneeling faithful."

Fact:     Papal Visitor’s Statements Regarding Medjugorje

Pope Francis sent Archbishop Henryk Hoser to study the spirituality of Medjugorje for several months in 2017 as his official Papal Envoy. In 2018, the Archbishop was sent back to live indefinitely in Medjugorje as an official Papal Visitor of the Holy Father.

Here are some statements the Archbishop has made regarding Medjugorje:

"Archbishop Henryk Hoser of Poland determined, after months of observing [Medjugorje] first-hand, that the message there “can be put at the same level as that delivered in the French city of Lourdes and the Portuguese city of Fatima” (according to a report in Crux Now.) He called Medjugorje — which has two-and-a-half million visitors a year, despite previous vehement opposition to it — “the spiritual lungs of Europe.”

 

One must take this all in: Medjugorje has not just a pastor overseeing it, not just a shrine rector, but now its own archbishop, which may be without precedent in major apparitions — replacing the authority of an antagonistic bishop in the nearby city of Mostar.
“With regard to the international phenomenology, they are very similar,” Archbishop Hose said, according to the website Total Croatia, in comparing it to Lourdes and Fatima.

“These are certainly the three greatest pilgrimage sites. The power of grace that is felt here, the power of God’s words here proclaimed, make us witness to many radical transformations that are happening here. Medjugorje has become the confessional of the world." There is a difference between Archbishop Hoser and many skeptics: he actually went there."

 Archbishop Hoser further attests:

1.    “Devotion of Medjugorje is allowed. It’s not prohibited, and need not be done in secret.” 

2.    Medjugorje is a “phenomenon”, a “movement [that] will not stop and should not be stopped”, saying it is “one of the most living places of prayer and conversion in Europe – with a healthy spirituality.
"

3.     “…All indications are that the revelations will be recognized… Specifically, I think it is possible to recognize the authenticity of the first apparitions as proposed by the cardinal commission. Ruini. Besides, it is difficult to get another verdict, because it is difficult to believe that six seers will lie for 36 years. What they say is consistent. There are no people haunted or mentally disturbed. The powerful argument for the authenticity of the apparitions is Faithfulness to the doctrine of the Church.
 If the revelations, and at least the first seven, will be recognized, this will be a tremendous stimulus for Medjugorje."


4.      “Today, dioceses and other institutions can organize official pilgrimages.”

"[A diocesan trip to Medjugorje would be] a pilgrimage of spiritual transformation, conversion and consolidation of faith – because all these elements are realized there."

Fact: In his writings, Father Gabriel Amorth, who for 20 years was the Vatican’s chief exorcist of Rome before his death, spoke often of the Queen of Peace of Medjugorje and defined the apparitions as “a massive work of catechesis”, which directs us, every day, to the ways to win the battle against evil.  He said:

“God has given us Mary as the last chance to save humanity.”    

Fact: Jesus tells us how to judge whether something is good or evil. He tells us:  

A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. (Luke 6:43)

Regarding the fruits, Father Amorth proclaims: 

“The Gospel is so clear, it tells us how to discern! By the fruits you will know the tree! It has been 30 years ... [and] Medjugorje has given us fruits that are ultimately exquisite! Confession, conversion, vocations, graces of every kind! For more than 30 years!” 

What if God really is sending someone from heaven to convert our hearts?

If the apparitions are true, it isn't without reason that God is sending his Mother to us and so it most be of tremendous importance. 
The reason can be found in Mary's reported messages, which urge people to be converted. The following reported messages express the urgency of Our Mother's call:

Our Mother’s Messages ARE AT The Heart of Medjugorje

“I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness of life, and to enjoy this fullness and peace, you must return to God”.

"… The only thing that I would want to tell you is to be converted. Make that known to all my children as quickly as possible. No pain, no suffering is too great to me in order to save you. I will pray to my Son not to punish the world; but I beseech you, be converted. You cannot imagine what is going to happen nor what the Eternal Father will send to earth. That is why you must be converted! Renounce everything. Do penance. Express my acknowledgement to all my children who have prayed and fasted. I carry all this to my Divine Son in order to obtain an alleviation of His justice against the sins of mankind. I thank the people who have prayed and fasted. Persevere and help me to convert the world." 1040

"Dear children! I want to lead you on the road to conversion. I desire that you convert the world and that your life be a conversion for others. Do not fall into infidelity. Let each one of you be completely submitted to my will and to the will of God. Beginning this day, I give you special graces, and in particular the gift of conversion. How to attain this conversion are the core of her reported messages, which include asking us to pray for peace, to pray with our heart by meditating continually on Jesus' life, death and resurrection - to fast, to confess, to have strong faith and to center our lives on worshiping God in the Mass and reading Scripture.

This formula and the grace pouring down from heaven has converted countless souls, who have become completely devoted to God through her messages. 

In essence, through Mary's intercession, those who heed her reported messages are holding fast to the two pillars that St. John Bosco saw as the salvation of the Church: the Eucharist and our Blessed Mother.

We are now facing the final confrontation between the Church and the anti-church, between the gospel and the anti-gospel, between Christ and the antichrist. The confrontation lies within the plans of Divine Providence. Have You Entered through the Holy Doors? Profound Reasons to Make the Effort While There is Still Time

Open Wide the Doors of Christ!!! 

In this time of such deep division, confusion, hatred and violence.  God has given us the remedy.  For, "where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more" Romans 5:20.
Thus, let us never lose hope; but, instead, commit ourselves to receiving and pouring out all the grace that abounds in the Body of Christ during this Extraordinary Year of Mercy.

By entering through the Holy Doors, we are entering into not only into unfathomable realities, but we are tangibly responding to what St. John Paul II proclaimed in his first homily as Pope:

"Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors for Christ. To his saving power open the boundaries of States, economic and political systems, the vast fields of culture, civilization and development. Do not be afraid. Christ knows "what is in man". He alone knows it."

This Extraordinary Year ends this Sunday, November 20th on the Solemnity of Christ the King.  So, we only have a few days left to experience the grace of entering through the Holy Doors.

The Holy Doors are signs of this abounding grace and saving power of Christ in so many ways...

But to enter into this abounding grace, it is helpful to first understand this time of Jubilee.

During this Extraordinary Year of Mercy, every diocese has taken up to call to "open wide the doors of Christ!" They have responded by opening doors that are normally sealed in Cathedrals and other designated Churches so that they become Jubilee Doors - Holy Doors.

The Holy Doors are a Sign of the Great Jubilee Year

It is a sign of the great Jubilee Year that God instructed His people to declare every 50 years in the Old Covenant. This Jubilee would mark a time of extraordinary mercy following the perfect number of years (Seven is known as the number of perfection in Scripture. Thus, we arrive at 49 years by multiplying seven years by seven).  

In the Jubilee year ( see Leviticus 25:8-13) the Mercy of God was particularly manifested as it granted liberty to all. Remitting all debts and giving God's people the ability to return to their own home and their own families, regardless of how they might have squandered them away in previous years. It was a year of rest of labor and considered a Sabbath of years that was holy, in which all were to eat of its increase! 

In light of this knowledge, it is apparent that this Extraordinary Year of Mercy is exactly that: extraordinary!  Pope Francis felt compelled to inaugurate a Jubilee without waiting for another 50 years to come around again, proclaiming in his teaching the preeminence of Jesus as God's Mercy incarnate:  

Jesus Christ is the face of the Father’s mercy. These words might well sum up the mystery of the Christian faith. Mercy has become living and visible in Jesus of Nazareth, reaching its culmination in him.

We have been living in this time of extraordinary grace and mercy (perhaps without realizing it) since December 8th, 2015. This year has been a sign for us to cling to Christ and the Mercy He has won for us.  And by doing so, we are to be assured that God is more powerful than the sin and evil that is so prevalent in our world. 

So, what's the big deal about going through Holy Doors?  

After this Sunday, we can't enter through Holy Doors... Why is it important?

And why doors?  It seems like an odd way to show forth God's grace and mercy. 

Actually, these same questions are ones that I've asked myself.  So, I've prayed for wisdom  so that I could enter more fully into this gift the Church has given us.

The Holy Doors Reveal Deep Scriptural Insights

As I prayed, I began to realize how deeply scriptural the Holy Doors are!  The Scriptures not only give us understanding regarding the Holy Doors themselves, but provide profound opportunities to contemplate Christ as we enter through them:

1. Jesus spoke about being the "Door" when He said HE is the ONLY way to the Father, saying:

"I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through me!" John 14:6

It is only through and in Christ that we have access to a relationship with the God of all creation.  It is in Jesus alone that God is revealed to us as the most Merciful of Fathers. Who, while we were still a long way off, catches sight of us and comes running to embrace us and restore to us everything that sin has tried to rob us of -- not only our birthright, but also our Father's daily provisions and most importantly, our relationship with Him as His sons and daughters!

2. "I am the sheep gate. Whoever enters through me shall be saved..." John 10:9

It is profound to comprehend there were no doors to keep the sheep from wandering in Jesus' time... the shepherd would lie across the opening and become, himself, their door of safety and protection.  He was the shield that would keep evil from his flock. 

The Holy Doors Are A Tangible Sign of Untold and Beautiful Realities

St. John writes of his visions of heaven, saying: "I had a vision of an open door to heaven..."  Rev. 4:1

How profound to realize that by entering through the doors of the Catholic Church, we enter into the mystery of heaven present in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass! 

If we had eyes to see, we would see that every Catholic Church is itself an open door to heaven, in which we are lifted up in the Spirit! Where, in the Mass and in the Sacraments, the great cosmic battle between God and Satan for our souls is won for us in the One, Eternal, Perpetual offering of the Son to the Father that transcends all space and time. In the Mass, we encounter the One Who lives to constantly intercede for us (cf. Heb. 7:25; Rom. 8:34)!

The Holy Doors Physically Express God's Opening Heart of Mercy

Secondly, God loves to use ordinary things to show forth the extraordinary love He has for us! He desires that His love is tangible -- that it is touchable to our senses.  

For the most extreme example -- think of bread and wine becoming His very Body and Blood.
Or water being the sign of Baptism, bringing forth cleansing and new life in which we become tabernacles of God Most High, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 

Or the fact that we, as his adopted children, are called to be His Living Presence -- His hands and feet, as well as His priests, prophets and kings --here on earth!

This is the reason Pope Francis placed a sign outside of the Holy Doors of St. Peter's, which reads: 

"As you pass through the Holy Door remember that Jesus is the door who introduces you to the embrace of God's mercy. "

Thus, if we are in the Spirit, by going through the Holy Doors we enter through the heart of Christ into the Arms of Our Merciful Father, Who is ever ready to forgive us!

It is good to ponder the profound depth of this Mystery:
By entering through the doors, we are physically invited to enter into the very Heart of Christ, pierced out of love for us. We are called to be washed by the blood and water that pours forth as a fountain of life and grace for our souls, which opens the way to the Father and pours forth the Holy Spirit in our hearts, so that through Him, with Him, in Him we can renew the face of the earth!

The Holy Doors Are Symbolic Of Our Response To God's Unfathomable Mercy. 

By entering through the doors, we are tangibly invited to open wide the door of our hearts, minds and wills to receive the Mercy that Jesus suffered, died and rose from the dead to give us.

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me"  Rev. 3:20.

Jesus has won our freedom, but it is up to us to respond and to accept the embrace of the Merciful Father and allow Him to shower gifts of sonship and so enter into relationship with Him! We do this by returning home to Him with a humbled and contrite heart seeking only to give ourselves as an offering to Him. 

Lastly, They Signify God's Desire To Heal The World Through Us!

Remember, God wants to make use of His creation to proclaim His love - to be a tangible, physical sign of His power and grace! He tells us:  "All I have is yours."  Lk 15:31 

And it is exactly in receiving all He has that we are given the means to give. It is in being loved that we are able to love. It is in receiving Mercy that we are able to be mercy for others. 

Thus, the act of going through Holy Doors is not meant to be a selfish act of receiving only mercy for ourselves, but an action that in time will lead us to long to live the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.  It is meant to be an action that pleads for the grace of Jesus' Sacrifice to pour upon souls to quench the fires of violence and hatred that Satan is stirring up within us and among us.  We must never lose sight that we are fighting a supernatural battle that is a result of sin, division and confusion that stems from rejecting of God's Mercy and His Truth.  So, we hold fast to the supernatural means of grace and the power of prayer to open hearts to receive and be transformed by the infinite tenderness and love of God!

Of course, the Doors of Mercy closing isn't a sign of God's Mercy ending for us. 

But, by receiving this extraordinary grace, we are able to pour out His Mercy in a unique way to the suffering Church in all its forms.

Going through Holy Doors during this Jubilee of Mercy has been something deeply meaningful to ponder and even more profound to experience.

I was able to enter through Holy Doors not only in my home diocese, but throughout Rome and Italy this past Spring. (You can read about my pilgrimage during this Year of Mercy here).

It is because I have had these extraordinary experiences, I feel compelled to share this opportunity with you while there is still time.

So, please consider taking a minute or two to locate a Holy Door in your area and make a plan to enter through it.  Do it not just for yourself, but to help God pour forth His Mercy on our families, on the poor souls in purgatory, on our nation and on the world!
